On Tuesday, July 29, 2025, the Palestinian Institute for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights at the Faculty of Law and Political Science at An-Najah National University organized a field training visit to Al-Haq Organization in Ramallah. The visit included participation from students enrolled in the “International Justice” course within the Master’s Program in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, members of the university team preparing for the Arab Moot Court competition, and students from the “Pioneers of Law and Politics” student association.
The visit aimed to provide students with firsthand exposure to the practice of human rights work in Palestine, and to enhance their theoretical and applied knowledge of international humanitarian law and human rights, particularly within relevant regional and Arab legal frameworks.
During the visit, students met with Mr. Shawan Jabarin, Director of Al-Haq, who delivered an in-depth presentation on the history of the organization and its long-standing work in defending human rights in Palestine. He highlighted the major challenges faced by human rights defenders under occupation and emphasized the importance of maintaining professionalism and independence in documenting violations.
The students also met with Mr. Wissam Ahmad, Director of Al-Haq’s Applied International Law Center, who addressed the importance of combining theoretical knowledge with critical and applied understanding of international legal tools. He underscored the need to build a Palestinian human rights discourse rooted in the existing colonial context.
Additionally, Mr. Ashraf Abu Hayyeh delivered a rich lecture on the Arab Charter on Human Rights and the Arab Court of Human Rights, discussing the background behind their establishment, their unique standing within the Arab regional system, and their place within the broader international legal context.
The visit concluded with a lecture by Ms. Nuwar Bdeir, who spoke about freedom of opinion and expression and the international mechanisms that protect it. She explored the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), the role of the Human Rights Council, and various UN mechanisms, supported by real-world examples drawn from the Palestinian context.
This visit represents a part of the Institute’s broader efforts to promote applied legal education and bridge students’ academic studies with real-world practice and institutions. It aligns with the objectives of the EU-funded project to establish the Palestinian Institute for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights.
