The Palestinian Institute for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights at the Faculty of Law and Political Science, An-Najah National University, has launched a new academic course on “International Humanitarian Law” during the first semester of the 2025/2026 academic year, in cooperation with the Master’s Program in International Law and Human Rights at the University.
The course is taught and supervised by Professor Karen Gréwall, a lawyer, human rights activist, and researcher with extensive international experience in the fields of international humanitarian law and human rights. Professor Gréwall has worked in various post-conflict and transitional contexts, including Sierra Leone, Kosovo, and Sri Lanka.
This course explores the fundamental principles, sources, and scope of application of international humanitarian law in both international and non-international armed conflicts. It also examines the protection of civilians, prisoners of war, and refugees, as well as state responsibility for violations of international humanitarian law and mechanisms for its enforcement at both the national and international levels. In addition, the course addresses contemporary challenges to the application of international humanitarian law, including issues related to occupation and the use of modern technologies in armed conflicts.
The development and introduction of this course are part of the ongoing academic activities implemented by the Palestinian Institute for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights to advance international legal education and strengthen the teaching of international humanitarian law and human rights in Palestinian universities. This initiative falls within the framework of the project of the establishment of the Palestinian Institute for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, funded by the European Union.
