The Faculty of Law and Political Science and the Palestinian Institute for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights at An-Najah National University, and in cooperation with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the occupied Palestinian territory, concluded a specialized training program on The Protection of Human Rights within the Framework of the United Nations System. The program was held on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 19–20, 2025, with the participation of a group of students interested in human rights issues.
The two-day program included several activities. The first day featured introductory sessions on the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and its office in the occupied Palestinian territory, in addition to discussions on the emergence of the concept of human rights and international human rights law, as well as the key rights enshrined in international conventions. Participants also examined the importance of Palestine’s accession to international human rights conventions and the resulting obligations and opportunities to strengthen the protection of rights.
The first day also included an online meeting via Microsoft Teams with a representative of the UN Human Rights Office, dedicated to discussing the rights of persons with disabilities and the international mechanisms that safeguard them. The session further provided an open dialogue with students on advocacy tools and the defense of youth rights.
The second day focused on the different United Nations mechanisms designed to ensure the implementation of human rights, including treaty bodies, Human Rights Council mechanisms, the Universal Periodic Review, and special procedures, with particular attention to the Palestinian experience in this regard. Mr. Solomon Frank Sacco from the UN Human Rights Office also delivered a keynote address via Teams, highlighting the main human rights challenges in the occupied Palestinian territory and responding to participants’ questions.
This program forms part of a series of activities hosted and organized by the Institute under the project to establish the Palestinian Institute of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, funded by the European Union, which aims to deepen the understanding of international law and to employ it in serving justice and human rights issues in Palestine.
