The Palestinian Institute for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights at the Faculty of Law and Political Science at An-Najah National University held a workshop on Tuesday, 16 December 2025, on “International Law at a Crossroads: Navigating Wars and Global Crises,” in cooperation with the Faculty of Law and Public Administration at Birzeit University. The workshop hosted the visiting professor at the institute, professor Kiran Grewal, and brought together a group of students from the disciplines of Law and International Relations.
The workshop examined and discussed the rapid transformations taking place in international law amid the escalation of wars and global crises, and the accompanying challenges related to the effectiveness of international protection frameworks and accountability mechanisms. It also addressed the complexities of applying the rules of international humanitarian law and human rights law in protracted conflict settings. In addition, the discussion focused on the gap between legal norms and political practice and its impact on the capacity of international law to respond to grave violations and to ensure a minimum level of protection for civilians. The workshop also highlighted the role of international law in light of the recent escalation related to the Palestinian situation.
This workshop forms part of a series of activities implemented by the Palestinian Institute for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, as part of its efforts to create multidisciplinary academic spaces, deepen dialogue on contemporary international legal issues relevant to the Palestinian and global contexts, and strengthen the linkage between theoretical knowledge and practical analysis. The workshop was held within the framework of the Institute’s establishment project, funded by the European Union.
