On 29 November 2025, the Palestinian Institute for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, in partnership with the Faculty of Law and Political Science and the Center for Academic and Professional Development at An-Najah National University, organized an academic roundtable hosting Professor Peter Levine from Tufts University in the United States, one of the leading scholars in the field of civic engagement and democracy.

The title of the workshop was: Civic Engagement, Democratic Resilience, and the International Legal Order, with the aim of fostering an in-depth academic discussion linking civic engagement, the resilience of democratic societies, and the international legal order, as well as exploring opportunities for joint academic and research collaboration.

The event took place at the Faculty of Law and Political Science at An-Najah National University, with the participation of a distinguished group of faculty members, researchers, and interested participants. The roundtable focused on analyzing the interrelated relationship between civic engagement and the resilience of democratic systems amid global political transformations, and on the role of the international legal order in protecting civic space and promoting societal participation. Participants also discussed the legal challenges associated with the decline of democratic values and the impact of crises and conflicts on civic engagement, in addition to reviewing theoretical and practical frameworks that contribute to strengthening responsible civic action in national and international contexts. The discussion further addressed prospects for academic and research cooperation, particularly the development of joint research projects, the organization of academic exchange programs, and the establishment of international research networks concerned with civic engagement, democracy, and international law.

This activity forms part of the efforts of the Palestinian Institute for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights to promote scientific research and academic dialogue and to engage with international academic expertise, contributing to the development of legal knowledge and the consolidation of the values of civic engagement and democracy, within the framework of the Institute Establishment Project funded by the European Union.
