The legal clinic at the Faculty of Law and Political Science at An-Najah National University, in cooperation with Mothers School Society in Nablus, organized an awareness-raising legal day entitled "Personal status and laws governing the family" on Sunday, 16 February 2025. The meeting was held at the headquarters of the Mothers' School Association in Nablus, which provided training to the lawyer and legal adviser of the legal clinic, Mohammed Al-Atrash.
The meeting began with a welcome speech from Al-Atrash, who expressed his appreciation to Mothers' School Society for the ongoing partnership in spreading legal awareness among Palestinian society. He stressed the importance of cooperation between the legal clinic and the Association in sensitizing Palestinian society, especially in the difficult circumstances it was experiencing. He also stressed that the meeting reflected the legal clinic's commitment to promoting awareness of the laws governing the family, in the framework of promoting justice and equality among individuals.
The meeting included an extensive discussion on the legal legislation governing the family in Palestine, beginning from the stage of engagement through marriage, to family building and children's upbringing. The matrimonial rights of both parties were also highlighted in accordance with Palestinian legislation, as well as rights relating to expenses and custody, as well as other topics such as viewing, hosting and dispersal. The meeting touched upon the presentation of factual cases that had been dealt with in a legal manner, providing participants with an opportunity to interact and enquire about personal status issues.
Time was also allocated to answer questions from the audience, where they had the opportunity to ask questions about family and personal status issues. Accurate answers were provided in accordance with Palestinian law, which helped participants better understand their rights and duties. The meeting was attended by women from the community, who expressed appreciation for this legal training, which enhances their capacity to deal with family legal issues.
This legal workshop is consistent with the sustainable development goals, especially Goal 5, "Achieve gender equality and empower women and girls". Through the introduction of this awareness workshop, women are empowered to understand their legal rights, thereby contributing to their active participation in society and making informed decisions about their family life. Women's awareness of the laws governing the family also contributes to gender equity and equality, enhancing social cohesion and contributing to the building of a fairer and more advanced society.
The workshop is part of a series of awareness-raising activities carried out by the legal clinic at An-Najah National University, within the project to enhance the sustainability of the legal clinic, funded by Sawasya 3 program, implemented in partnership with UNDP, UN-Women and UNICEF.
