As part of its efforts to enhance community legal awareness and address challenges related to cybercrime, the An-Najah Legal Incubator at the Faculty of Law and Political Science at An-Najah National University conducted a legal awareness campaign titled “Cyber Extortion” on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at the Awda Association for Development and Rehabilitation in New Askar Camp. The campaign was delivered by the Incubator’s pioneers, lawyers Raghad Tanbour and Farah Tbeileh.
The campaign targeted members of the local community and focused on introducing participants to the concept of cyber extortion and its various forms. It highlighted the most common methods used through social media platforms and digital applications, as well as the key factors that may lead individuals to become victims of such crimes, in addition to preventive measures.
The campaign also addressed the legal dimensions of cyber extortion, including its legal elements and the penalties imposed under Palestinian legislation. Participants were further guided on the appropriate steps to take if exposed to extortion, including not responding to the perpetrator, preserving digital evidence, and reporting the incident to the competent authorities.
In addition, the campaign provided practical guidance on digital safety, emphasizing the importance of not sharing personal information with unknown parties, avoiding the exchange of sensitive content, using strong passwords, and activating available cybersecurity measures.
Through an interactive approach, the session included discussions on real-life cases, where legal aspects were analyzed, contributing to strengthening participants’ legal awareness and their ability to respond appropriately to such situations.
This campaign contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) through promoting legal awareness, Goal 5 (Gender Equality) by protecting vulnerable groups from exploitation, and Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by enhancing awareness of legal rights and access to justice mechanisms.
This initiative is part of a series of activities implemented by the Legal Clinic under the project “Enhancing the Sustainability of the Legal Clinic,” funded by the Sawasya III Programme in partnership with UNDP, UN Women, and UNICEF.
