As part of its efforts to enhance community legal awareness and empower women with knowledge of their legal rights, the An-Najah Legal Incubator at the Faculty of Law and Political Science at An-Najah National University conducted a legal awareness campaign titled “Marriage Contracts and Their Legal Implications under Personal Status Law” on Monday, May 4, 2026, at the Women’s Activity Center in Old Askar Camp. The campaign was delivered by the Incubator’s pioneers, lawyers Israa Affaneh and Aseel Abu Dhiab.
The campaign targeted women from the local community and focused on introducing the concept of the marriage contract as a legally binding agreement with specific elements, conditions, and legal consequences. It also emphasized the importance of officially documenting marriage contracts to safeguard the rights and obligations of both parties.
The session addressed key legal provisions related to marriage contracts under Palestinian Personal Status Law, including conditions for validity, and the legal rights and obligations arising from the contract, such as maintenance, housing, and mutual duties between spouses. It also covered issues related to dowry, guardianship, and the role of the contract in regulating family relations.
The campaign further highlighted common legal challenges associated with marriage contracts, particularly unregistered marriages and their legal implications, as well as available legal protection mechanisms, aiming to strengthen women’s ability to protect their rights and make informed legal decisions.
Through an interactive approach, the session included open discussions on real-life cases, where legal aspects were analyzed, contributing to enhancing participants’ practical understanding and linking legal theory to real-life situations.
This campaign contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) through promoting legal awareness, Goal 5 (Gender Equality) by empowering women legally, and Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by strengthening awareness of legal rights and access to justice.
This initiative is part of a series of activities implemented by the Legal Clinic under the project “Enhancing the Sustainability of the Legal Clinic,” funded by the Sawasya III Programme in partnership with UNDP, UN Women, and UNICEF.
