The scholarship is offered by the University of Edinburgh Development Trust in conjunction with SKO Family Law Specialists. A single scholarship is available for study beginning in September 2017.

Applicants are free, indeed expected, to choose their own topic.  The topic must be in a family law related subject.  Emphasis may be on legal doctrine, legal theory or socio-legal issues.  Comparative perspectives are welcome.   

The scholarship is for £2000 per annum.

The scholarship is awarded for one year in the first instance, and in the case of a PhD scholarship, will be renewed annually for a further two years, subject to satisfactory progress.  Where a student is admitted to the LLM by research programme and successfully converts to the PhD programme (in accordance with the University requirements), the scholarship will be awarded for a further two years, subject to satisfactory progress.

The scholarship is open to anyone who, by the start of the Degree Programme, holds an Honours or Masters Degree in law (or equivalent) and who has already been offered and accepted a place for LLM by Research or PhD study by the University of Edinburgh.

Deadline: All applications should be received no later than 5pm (GMT) on 30 April 2017.

The Law School will have full discretion to offer or not to offer the scholarship.   

Edinburgh Law School will receive all applications, manage the selection process and identify the preferred recipient of the award.  The preferred recipient’s application will then be provided to SKO Family Law Specialists (“SKO”) for approval. When SKO’s approval has been obtained, Edinburgh Law School will then announce the recipient of the award.  

One of the directors of SKO will be available to meet the student to provide such support as may be useful to the student’s work during the student’s programme (at least once per annum).  It is intended that the student and SKO will work together for the purpose of encouraging cooperation between the academic study of family law and the practice of family law by collaborating to give public lectures or writing articles or the like (not more than once per annum).  

Scholars are encouraged to devote their whole time to the study of their subject.  It is recognised that students may require to fund their studies through part-time work.  It is recommended that scholars do not work more than six hours per week and the scholar will be encouraged that any such part-time work should, whenever possible, consist of teaching and other work relevant to the scholar’s research.
